The aim of the Wegiz is that ICT systems will soon be able to communicate with each other so that healthcare providers can easily share data with each other. The Wegiz focuses on mandating electronic exchange agreements. The Wegiz is about how data should be exchanged, not whether data may be exchanged. This is because the data that needs to be exchanged to enable the provision of good care is determined by the healthcare providers themselves, and they then record this.
Together with the field, represented in the Healthcare Information Council, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport drew up a Multi-year Wegiz Agenda in which four designated data exchanges were prioritised: Medication Transfer, Basic Care Data Set, Nursing Transfer and Image Availability. To this, a fifth data exchange, namely that in Acute Care, was added from the Integral Care Agreement (IZA).
The Wegiz is also included in the National Vision and Strategy on the Health Information System that the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport earlier presented to the House of Representatives.
