The purpose of the European Artificial Intelligence Act is to promote the development of reliable AI systems and so protect the rights of people and companies. Anyone who develops AI systems or uses them in their organisation could find themselves dealing with the AI Act.
The security rules apply to anyone who provides any of a wide range of AI systems or is responsible for their use, including AI that helps with making decisions, making predictions, creating content or helping people.
Benefiting from the opportunities presented by AI
The new Act gives organisations assurance that the AI that they use is responsible and that they are benefiting optimally from the opportunities that AI presents. The Act will come into force in phases, with most of the rules being in effect by around mid-2027. Some AI systems will be banned from as early as February 2025, so it is important to be prepared. To help, the Guide describes the most important rules from the Artificial Intelligence Act.
The Artificial Intelligence Act contains detailed legislation about AI for the whole of the European Union (EU). It sets out rules for AI’s responsible development and application by companies, government agencies and other organisations, with a view to protecting people’s safety, health and fundamental rights.
